I've been seeing alot more 1967-68 Camaros with the factory gauges replaced with 5" Autometers. They make many different models so finding the ones you like will be your first step. Visit Autometer on line.
I went with the following.
6801 Tach with recall
5189 0-160mph Speedo
5291 Electronic speedometer sender
I also used the following from Radio Shack
After taking out the stock housing with gauges I traced all wire that plugged into the unit.
Alot of the wires will not be needed with the new gauges. On my car there was a plug with 12 possible plug-ins.
| 1. Tan wire | Fuel Gauge | Not used with new set up |
| 2. Green wire | Temp Gauge | Not used with new set up |
| 3. Gray | Dash Lights | Used |
| 4. No wire | ||
| 5. No wire | ||
| 6. No wire | ||
| 7. Red | Hot Wire off ignition switch | Used |
| 8. Blue with white line | Oil | Not used with new set up |
| 9. Light Blue | Left Turn | Used |
| 10. Light Brown | Brake Light | Not used with new set up |
| 11. Dark Brown | Gen Light | Not used with new set up |
| 12. Dark Blue | Right Turn | Used |
Now this was the way my car was wired, your car could be different. This is just to give something to base the wiring on.
In this photo you can see that the old metal housing was reused to retain the Autometer Gauges. The gauge holes will need to be opened up so new gauges will fit. As you can see from the photo the tach housing (Black) is a different shape then the speedo gauge. (More on that following next photo.) I also put some little spacers at all the mounting bolts. I got them at my local hardware store. there 1/8 ID X 1/4 OD X 1/4 long. I then drilled to 9/32 holes at the top of each gauge tube for the green LED's for the turn signals. Ran the ground wires to the high beam lights ground, and the hot wires will go to DARK (Right Turn) & LIGHT (Left Turn) Blue wires.
I wanted to use a Tach with a remote recall so I needed to make something different to hold it in place. I made up a plate out of 1/16 Aluminum. This will not be necessary if you use a non-recall Tach.
This is how the assembly looks before reinstalling it back in the car. NOTE: The green LEDs for the turn signals. I installed the speedo sender to the transmissions cable gear and ran the wire the same way my old cable went. wired up the sender to the new speedo then ran the hot wire to the # 7 Red wire, and ran a good ground. All the lights ran to the # 3 Gray wire along with a ground.
And this is what the finished job looks like. All in all the job went fairly easy, the biggest setback was the way the tach had to be mounted. Again to avoid this just use a non-recall Tach. Hope this helps. If you have any question about the install just drop me a line. Gauge Questions
